There were more insects then also. Grasshoppers were the biggest problem. To kill some of these grasshoppers, farmers would go to Aurora to get sawdust with banana oil and poison in it. They would take it in wagons out into the alfalfa field to scatter in the field. Of course the flies were always thick. When milking they would bite the cows and fall in the milk and the cows would kick and knock the milk over. She never really liked milk anyway. Marlene also remembers lots more butterflies in the fields. All kinds of black and yellow swallowtails along with sulfur and cabbage butterflies roamed the fields around her house.
