Christmas was always a big time as it is now. Zion's Church had two big Christmas trees all decorated with candles they would light for the program on Christmas Eve. To prevent a fire, either tree had two men by them with long poles with sponges on the end and a bucket of water. She never did see anything catch on fire. One Christmas she received a bicycle that she had been wanting for quite a few years. On Christmas day she was going to try out that bike. "It was a heavy bike, lots heavier than any of your bikes. It was a boy's bike because my dad thought they were tougher." She remembers, "I took that bike out on a foggy Christmas day, not real cold, but foggy. I'd never ridden a bike before so I wasn't very good, but off I went down our driveway, and I ran into the hay wagon and broke off the light on my bike. My dad never put it back on either. That was the only bike I ever had."
